Weight the eleven digits alternately from the right, starting at 3, sum them, and subtract from the next multiple of ten. It's the same mod-10 rule as EAN, and this page runs it live as you type.
Not for retail. The leading digits are a company prefix licensed from GS1, and an invented number risks colliding with a real product already using it. This generator produces a valid barcode from whatever digits you enter, but it can't issue the number. For internal labelling, use Code 128 and skip the problem.
Effectively, yes — a UPC-A is an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and retail scanners read both. UPC-A is the North American convention; EAN-13 is used everywhere else.
UPC-E is the compressed 8-digit form for small packaging, made by suppressing zeros from a UPC-A. There's a generator for it on the UPC-E page.
