How to make a EAN-13 barcode

  1. 1

Enter the 12-digit number. The check digit appears beside the field as you type.

  2. 2

Check the number is one you're entitled to use — see the FAQ on GS1 prefixes.

  3. 3

Adjust the bar height and quiet zone for the packaging it's going on.

  4. 4

Download SVG so the bars stay crisp at whatever size it's printed.

Questions

How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?

Take the 12 digits, weight them alternately from the right — the rightmost by 3, the next by 1, and so on — add the results, then subtract the total from the next multiple of ten. This page does it as you type, which is also a quick way to verify a number you've been given.

Can I invent my own EAN-13 number?

Not for retail. The first digits are a company prefix issued by GS1, and a number you make up may already belong to someone else — which is how two different products end up scanning as the same item. This tool generates a technically valid barcode from whatever digits you enter; it can't allocate the number itself. For internal use where nothing is scanned at a till, Code 128 avoids the problem entirely.

What's the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?

UPC-A is the 12-digit North American form, and it's really an EAN-13 with a leading zero. Modern retail scanners read both. If you're selling in North America, use UPC-A; elsewhere, EAN-13.

How small can I print it?

The nominal size is about 37 × 26 mm. GS1 allows scaling between 80% and 200% of that, and going below 80% is where scan failures at the till start. If it won't fit, EAN-8 exists for exactly that reason.
