Rail and airline tickets, mostly — Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, Eurostar and many boarding passes. They're designed to survive being read off a phone screen at an angle, in bad light, by a fixed scanner.
The finder pattern is a bullseye in the middle rather than markers at the corners, so a scanner locks on from the centre outwards and doesn't need blank space around the edge. That's how it fits on a crowded ticket.
Aztec is more compact for short payloads and needs no margin, but phone cameras and generic scanner apps handle QR far more reliably. Use Aztec when a ticketing system asks for it; use QR for anything the public will scan themselves.
